California State University Long Beach, Department of Computer Engineering
and Computer Science, course number 470, Web Programming and Accessibility.
Grading
Grade components:
- Individual programming assignments
- Individual reading assignments, with quizzes
- Project (individual or group)
- Attendance
Grading sequence:
- I won't accept late work. Period. (See CSULB attendance policy for emergencies.)
- If you are going to be absent for a class, you must
have the assignment done in advance. If you are going to be absent for several classes
(out of town on business, for example), drop the course.
- All Web page assignments must be in the location and have the file name that is
specified in the assignment—and must have permissions set correctly. If I get a
"403" or "404" in the browser, you get a "0."
The way to be sure is to click on your page from the "pages" links shown at
left for each assignment. (These will generally be posted just before the due date.)
- Your Web pages must be in place at least 30 minutes prior
to the start of the
lecture period on the due date shown in the schedule, or at the time
and date specified in the assignment.
- If you miss lecture because you are still working on an assignment, you will
not get credit for the assignment.
- Quizzes will be done during lecture or lab periods as shown in the schedule.
Instructions for format and turn-in will be given separately.
- I will grade assignments on the day that
they are due (or shortly after). I expect to see improvement from each assignment
to the next.
Grading scale:
All assignments or assignment parts will be graded on a 16-point-maximum scale
in which each point represents 1/3 of a letter grade: 16=A+, 15=A, 14=A-, 13=B+, and so on down
to 3=F, 0=not submitted, -3=any plagiarism. This will make the raw scores look very low, but
they will be averaged on the same scale for the course grade. Remember that pluses and minuses
disappear from the course grade that is recorded—I reserve the right to make minor adjustments
in where the line is drawn between whole letter grades.
Important: if your grade on an assignment is C or better but less than
A+, please do not ask me why I "subtracted" points. I didn't. I added points above the
C that you would get for minimally acceptable work that just met the requirements of the assignment.
I will do my best to make the grading standards of each assignment visible to you.
Your strategy:
- Read each assignment carefully, as it is posted and described in class.
- Try to do at least what is called for in the assignment.
- Think about the assignment in terms of everything you've learned in this class.
- Keep up with the work—it's very difficult to "catch up" if you've fallen
behind the schedule.
- If you don't understand the assignment, ask about it.
- If you "need" a certain grade in the class, it should be your
motivation to work toward that grade. If you don't think I've given you enough feedback in
order to do a better job, talk to me—it's usually much easier to explain things in
person than in quick notes on a paper or quiz, or via email.
